MUROL Tales - Erik McRitchie

Erik is a part-time photographer who enjoys capturing the beauty of the mountainous terrain in his home province of Alberta, Canada. Motivated to learn more about photography after taking a trip to Africa, he began capturing compelling images of people and his adventurous experiences. He recently received a sponsorship from Lee Filters and works with local tourist agencies. Although he enjoys photographing vistas and the Rocky Mountains, as a new dad his favorite subject to capture is undisputedly his little guy, Sawyer.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm Erik McRitchie, a part-time photographer and full-time pastor from Alberta, Canada. Being in such close proximity to the mountains I shoot a lot of landscapes up here but I also really love capturing people. My absolute favorite is coming and capturing a human element in an beautiful landscape. Little people in big places!

When did you start taking photos?

I've been shooting for around 6 years now.

What inspired you to pick up a camera?

I was on a trip to Africa and I wanted to take some cool pictures while I was there. I borrowed my sisters Nikon D80 and her kit lens with the goal of documenting my experience. While there I was consistently frustrated, not knowing how to use the gear and not knowing how to accurately capture the people and places that I was experiencing. I decided then and there that I was going to do my very best to learn as much as I could about photography to better tell the stories of the people and places I experienced. I went home bought my first DSLR (a Nikon d90 and a 50mm 1.8 lens) and for nearly two years I literally shot every single day. I read as much as I could find about photography and tried to do my best to learn under people with way more experience than me.

What are cool projects you've worked on?

I am fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. With the Rocky Mountains in my back yard I get to explore, capture, and share these incredible places with the world. I've been lucky to work in close partnership with many of our local tourist agencies to help share these stories. I specialize in long exposure photography and have used Lee Filters products almost since I began shooting. A huge highlight for me was being officially sponsored by them this past year.

Tell us something interesting about you.

I'm a new dad to a little guy named Sawyer. Although I love shooting incredible vistas, amazing places, and beautiful moments, if I had to pick only one subject to capture for the rest of my life it would be him hands down.

What/who would you most like to capture and why?

I have a long list of places I'd love to shoot one day... Patagonia, the Dolomite's, and Norway are currently my top 3 choices to explore.

How did you hear about MUROL?

I received a message on Instagram I believe, inviting me to come and check it out!

What makes MUROL unique?

I've found that I have been shooting more portrait orientation images these days to cater to smart phone usage, but there is just something about seeing a beautiful image fill your entire screen. I love the detail and the immersive experience MUROL provides.

When did you see the bigger picture?

Holding my son for the very first time instantly brought a whole new perspective to my life. It was in that instant when I was reminded of the things in life that truly matter.
